In addition to whale sharks, the Atlanta Aquarium has five Beluga whales, which grow to about 15 feet long. They are a creamy white color, which makes for a stunning exhibit. The beluga whales of the Atlanta Aquarium are known as "canaries of the sea" because they make such a wide variety of sounds - which can actually be heard outside of the water! You can see the beluga whales making these noises by looking a the tops of their heads, where a rounded shape called "the melon" changes as the whale makes noise. |
